Calcium and Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is the most common disease of the bones. With osteoporosis, the bones become so fragile and weak that in some cases, a simple fall or even a cough or sneeze will result in fractures of the spine, hip and wrist. It is very important for us to be familiar with this disease so that we will be able to understand what causes osteoporosis and be able to choose the best treatments available.


The most common victims of this disease are women. In the US alone, there are about 10 million victims of Osteoporosis and 80% of them are female.  Statistics also show that 3 million people in the UK are suffering from this dreaded disease, and again most of them are women. This bone disease has been reported to have caused millions of fractures worldwide.

Osteoporosis is a silent but deadly disease which does not show any indications that confirms you have the disease. Contrary to popular belief, this bone disease can start at a very early age, especially those people who do not have sufficient amounts of calcium and vitamin D. People in their middle 20s to early 30s shouldn’t experience having osteoporosis if they have good nutrition.

Since Osteoporosis has very inconspicuous signs of showing, the circumstance may bear down on the person without him even knowing it until a serious injury happens to him. Osteoporosis builds up very little by little and may take from more than a few months to several years. But there are some early signs of this bone disease that you need to be aware of. These signs include: having pains on the joints, having a hard time standing, and having difficulty in sitting up straight.

Calcium is very important for the prevention of Osteoporosis. Calcium as one of the most vital minerals that is considered necessary to our bodies is the main ingredient in maintaining strong and healthy bones and teeth. It also takes part in the conduction of our nerves, the contraction of our muscles, and also the clotting of our blood.

It is very important for us to include calcium-rich foods in our daily diet. There are some vegetables that contain calcium but milk and other dairy products are still the most recommended calcium sources. With today’s technology, scientists have also developed calcium and vitamin D enrich supplements to help boost your calcium intake.

Although Osteoporosis develops very slowly, you should not be very worry-free about it. Once you see signs that you may think is osteoporosis, you better visit your doctor right away. Osteoporosis is much easier to treat especially at its early stages but remember that prevention is always better than cure. So drink at least a glass of milk a day to keep those brittle bones at bay.
